POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a dedicated Vaccine Research Biologist to join our team at the National Institutes of Health, specializing in evaluating vaccine efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) using a nonhuman primate (NHP) model. The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Immunology, Microbiology, or a related field, with at least four years of technical experience in a BSL-3 laboratory setting, specifically working with NHP models of TB. This role involves independently conducting research, developing and implementing BSL-3 level SOPs, performing various immunological assays, managing supplies, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing new assays to assess anti-mycobacterial activity, preparing scientific communications, and mentoring junior researchers. Extensive experience in flow cytometry, Luminex, and ELISA, as well as a solid understanding of T cell immunology related to vaccine efficacy, is essential.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Perform tasks related to evaluating TB vaccine efficacy in NHP models.

  • Independently plan experiments, write animal protocols, and analyze and interpret data.

  • Conduct immunological assays (flow cytometry, ELISA, Luminex) on NHP blood and tissue samples.

  • Manage supplies and equipment for BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories.

  • Monitor NHP sample inventories and manage shipping/receiving samples to/from collaborators.

  • Perform duties related to TB vaccine studies in NHPs at an off-site BSL-3 facility.

  • Develop and monitor compliance with a BSL-3 Safety Manual for TB vaccine studies in NHPs.

  • Develop BSL3-level SOPs for immune response monitoring and TB burden quantification.

  • Provide training on BSL-3 protocols and standardize procedures across the team.

  • Assist in recruiting and onboarding new research technicians for BSL-3 lab work.

  • Develop new assays to assess anti-mycobacterial activity ex vivo post-vaccination.

  • Prepare scientific communications including data abstracts, posters, presentations, and manuscripts.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Master’s degree in Immunology, Microbiology, or related field.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a BSL-3 laboratory working with NHP models of TB.

  • Extensive experience in isolating immune cells from blood and tissues and in culturing and quantifying Mtb.

  • Ability to train and oversee personnel on BSL-3 techniques and safety regulations.

  • Proficiency in evaluating cellular immune responses using flow cytometry, Luminex, and ELISA.

  • Strong understanding of T cell immunology as it relates to vaccine efficacy.

  • Demonstrated expertise in flow cytometry data analysis using FlowJo.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and GraphPad Prism.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills for protocol development, publication contribution, and data presentation.
