Kelly Services is actively recruiting for a Reactive Chemicals Associate Research Specialist for a Long Term Contract opportunity in Midland, MI.

Reactive Chemicals Associate Research Specialist in the Analytical Science capability of Core R&D. The Reactive Chemicals (RC) group in Analytical Science provides calorimetric and flammability measurement science, modeling, and advanced problem solving to enable rapid growth and ensure safe operations in labs, pilot plants, and production facilities.

The candidate will participate in project teams, so effective team skills and the ability to communicate needs, progress, and results are important. A self-starter that can work independently with technical support is desired. Good interpersonal skills are also required as the individual will be required to interact with lab customers (internal to client). High initiative and effective organizational skills are also beneficial as many projects have short notice and fast turnaround time needs. At times many projects may be initiated and conducted concurrently.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement technical solutions through hands-on experimentation/problem-solving for research problems that are well defined across multiple project areas.

  • Consistently applies the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving. Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses and learn appropriate use of Six Sigma tools to solve complex problems

  • Participate in the innovation process as it applies to your specific projects and contributing to the innovation process through new opportunity identification.

  • Communicate and appropriately document work in the form of internal reports/presentations and external publications/presentations (when appropriate). Draft and submit patent disclosures as appropriate.

  • Provide reactive chemicals testing support to help client partners appropriately quantify and manage the reactive chemicals hazards associated with their facilities or labs.

  • Conduct experimental studies in reactivity and thermal stability, in partnership with experienced technologists and Reactive Chemicals Subject Matter Experts (RC SMEs), and evaluate generated data/results.

  • Ensure documentation and testing is done with high quality aiming to ensure needs of the business.

  • Provide support in method development and validation studies.

  • Participate in technical training to attain on-the-job proficiency with calorimetry and flammability measurement science techniques.

  • The candidate will be expected to work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment composed of engineers, chemists, and other lab technologists.

  • Depending on the need of the projects, the job requires the ability to operate, conduct troubleshooting, and conduct characterization using one or more analytical technologies, including instruments such as DSC, Accelerating Rate Calorimeter, Heat of Mix calorimeters, Thermal Screening Unit (TSu), Vent Sizing Package, Flash Point, and AIT

Qualifications

Education:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering is required.

Master’s degree or additional relevant work experience a plus.
