Kelly Services Director, Formulations in Vancouver, Canada


Establish the strategic focus of the Formulation department (FD) by:

  • Act as the senior technical expert and represent the department on innovation and cross functional project teams

  • Establish overall Formulation development strategy and operating model

  • Define and communicate Formulation department-specific objectives that deliver on Innovation & Development

  • Identify future capability, technology needs, and pipeline opportunities

  • Lead Development innovation meetings and process improvements within production and new product development initiatives

  • Supplement internal resources and capabilities by developing and fostering partnerships across the organization and within the department by:

  • Ensuring industry leading capabilities and skillset of Formulations team

  • Maintaining and assessing FD capacity

  • Ensuring the Formulation team is appropriately trained and motivated

  • Evaluating individual performance and promptly remediating problems as needed

  • Identifying appropriate opportunities to outsource work

  • Act as the senior technical expert for function by providing sound technical expertise to team

  • Providing direction for 10+ person Formulation development team, and uses technical expertise and leadership to support and develop Formulations department across manufacturing sites

  • Coordinate the incorporation of Formulation Development feedback into Stage Gate documents

  • Ensure core team and senior management have accurate view of technical risks and challenges

Ensure that the procedures used by FD are safe and effective by:

  • Ensuring appropriate equipment and processes are used

  • Overseeing the development of Standard Operating Procedures for all FD tasks

  • Ensure all work processes comply with GMP and/or appropriate regulatory guidelines

  • Ensure FD team is adequately trained in all procedures and equipment and continually operates in a safe manner

  • Develop reporting and tracking mechanisms for business productivity progress and opportunity identification

  • Develop and adhere to departmental AOP budget

  • Develop and hold staff accountable for departmental MBOs & KPIs

  • Be the objective consultant for best practices in all functions, motivate and instill a culture of excellence

  • Recruit and train best in class Formulations professionals while supporting, coaching and mentoring ambitious team members in their career and personal development, at all levels of the organization

  • Staff management, complete annual performance reviews and development plans

  • Represent Formulations across functions on inter-department and cross-department initiatives

  • Exemplify the Company’s Core Values, and provides positive leadership, direction and support to FD personnel, ensuring that all provincial, federal and Company required HR, Payroll, Safety, Security and Sustainability related activities and initiatives are carried out consistently

  • Follow and adhere to all company policies, Work Procedures (WPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)

  • Promote a Health, Safety, and Wellness culture

  • Follow and adhere to all given instructions including work procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)

  • Strictly adhere to and observe all safety policies as outlined in the company policies and training sessions


Key Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering or related field plus 15 years’ experience

  • Proven track record of delivering innovative new product launches

  • Experience with global drug development and registration requirements for new and modified products

  • Demonstrated experience leading team of scientists and providing technical leadership for organization

  • Demonstrated understanding of industry trends, practices, techniques, and standards which impact the business and can translate that knowledge into action plans

  • Demonstrated technical project management and/or project leadership experience

  • Proven ability to operate with a high level of ambiguity while making sound and timely decisions based on project priorities and risk assessments

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring talent in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time

  • Well-developed ability to use computer and software applications and databases


  • Ability to effectively communicate and present with both executive management and frontline personnel

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and constant change

  • Strong leadership presence, people focused with proven ability to motivate high level performance work teams

  • Strong organizational and planning skills

  • Detail and goal-oriented with a strong ability to multi-task

  • Excellent written and verbal skills: interpersonal and presentation
